Helsinki

In Helsinki, Northern European design, particularly favored in Japan, is incorporated into every aspect of everyday life. I have become especially fond of small household items. Large mugs and gently rounded tableware enliven time spent with family and friends. In this city, people maintain an easy distance. Inaugurated in 2018, the Helsinki Central Library Oodi features arching lines that gently welcomed me, in keeping with its concept of “Open for all.” Spending time at a desk in the library became a daily routine. University students majoring in Japanese language studies spoke to me fluently, with shining eyes, as they described their love for Japan. I’m certain that my next miracle will be a reunion with some of them here in Japan.
